The World Baseball Classic has temporarily pulled several key contributors away from the New York Yankees during an important stretch of preparation for the 2026 season.
One of those players is catcher Austin Wells, who represented the Dominican Republic throughout the international tournament.
Following the Dominican Republic’s semifinal loss to the United States, Wells is now expected to rejoin the Yankees and resume preparations for Opening Day.

During Wells’ absence, however, backup catcher J.C. Escarra seized an opportunity to make a strong impression on the coaching staff.
Escarra’s recent performances earned significant praise from manager Aaron Boone, who spoke highly of the young catcher’s development.
“There’s no doubt in my mind he’s a top-half-of-the-league catcher,” Boone told The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner on Tuesday afternoon.
The endorsement stood out because Escarra experienced an inconsistent rookie season and spent part of last year back in the minor leagues.
During the 2025 campaign, the Yankees often relied on a combination of Wells, Escarra, and Ben Rice behind the plate.
Entering 2026, the organization hopes Wells can rediscover the form that made him one of the club’s most promising young players in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Yankees plan to focus Rice primarily at first base, especially after bringing back veteran Paul Goldschmidt in a reduced role.
Wells’ strong showing for the Dominican Republic and Escarra’s impressive stint as New York’s primary catcher have given the organization reason for optimism.
If both catchers take meaningful steps forward in 2026, the Yankees could significantly strengthen one of their most important positions and improve their chances of pursuing a 28th World Series championship.
